24.10.2017

The Holberg Committee met in Vienna on 19-20 October, where they decided on a shortlist of candidates for the Holberg Prize 2018.

The Holberg Prize is awarded annually to scholars who have made outstanding contributions to research in the arts and humanities, social sciences, law or theology. This year, the Holberg secretariat received 87 nominations for 81 candidates by the 15 June deadline . Since then, the Holberg Committee, chaired by Professor  Pratap Bhanu Mehta, have been working to put together a shortlist of candidates for the prize. The Committee members have had a challenging job selecting the best candidates from an impressive list of nominees.

The majority of the candidates are primarily affiliatiaded with institutions in either North America or Europe, but many of them also hold positions at universities and research institutions in other parts of the world.

What happens next?

The Holberg Committee consists of internationally renowned scholars within the academic disciplines covered by the Prize. The secretariat handles practical matters, but the Committee works independently in their review of the candidates. Now that the shortlist is ready, referees with in-depth knowledge of the candidates' work will be asked to write assessments on the eight shortlisted candidates.

The Holberg Committee will meet again in February to discuss the referee reports and decide on a recommendation to be submitted to the Holberg Board. Shortly thereafter, the Board formally selects the Holberg Laureate. The Holberg Laureate 2018 will be announced on 14 March at an event in Bergen, which will be broadcasted live from on this website.
